For three decades I have had the privilege to research various kinds of innovations in spatial planning and its practices. I have primarily investigated placemaking, policymaking and planning activities concerning urban areas at local and regional levels in Denmark, but also in Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and France. Repeatedly, I have encountered all sorts of urban development strategies and plans that were not born out of the formal (mandatory/statutory) spatial planning system – or from what has been labelled the ‘hard spaces’ of authority-based planning.

EURA Conversations is digital space for international exchange between urban scholars. It was created with the idea of providing a democratic arena to share experiences, offer reflections and encourage dialogue within the EURA community. Recently, the series entered a new era, one which aims to make the series more interactive, providing space for two voices: a leader setting out an idea, and a responder offering an initial reaction. It is also easier for readers to contribute their ideas to the international conversation via the comments section below each contribution.
