EUROLOC PhD Summer School 2020

We are happy to announce that in collaboration between the Standing Group on Local Government and Politics (ECPR) and the European Urban Research Association (EURA) this year’s EUROLOC Summer School, will be organized by NIG – the Netherlands Institute of Governance (the Dutch-Flemish Graduate School for Public Administration and Political Science).

The 2020 edition – ‘The Study of Local Governance: Looking backwards and forwards Achievements and emerging trends in the study of local politics and administration (on the occasion of EUROLOC's 25th anniversary)‘

will be held in Utrecht, The Netherlands, from 6th to 12th July 2020.

The Summer School provides a unique opportunity to develop a further understanding of local governance and local democracy in a comparative perspective and to discuss PhD-related topics with senior and junior colleagues. It offers a mixture of thematic and methodological lectures, field visits and PhD-sessions. In the latter, students will present their own research and discuss it with their peers and seniors in the field. They will also have the opportunity to consult with the lecturers on their PhD-project. PhD candidates who meet all course requirements will receive a certificate of participation (with EC credits). Moreover, the Summer School is also an excellent opportunity to build, deepen and extend your professional network in this field.

The main theme of this year’s EUROLOC Summerschool is closely related to EUROLOC's 25th anniversary celebrated in 2020. On this occasion it is appropriate to look

- backwards and consider: what were the main developments in different subfields in the study of local governance and democracy?

- forwards and map emerging trends in studying this subfield.

List of confirmed senior lecturers: dr. Rianne Dekker; prof. dr. Bas Denters; prof. dr. Sabine Kuhlmann; prof. dr. Andreas Ladner; dr. Ank Michels; prof. dr. Kristof Steyvers; prof. dr. Karsten Zimmermann.

The Summer School invites applications from PhD-candidates who want to participate. Applicants should be preparing a dissertation in the domain of local governance / local democracy.

Deadline for applications: 15 April 2020 (24:00 hrs.)

The Summer School will accept a maximum of 25 PhD-candidates. Participants will have to pay a modest fee of € 350,- (fee includes the costs of your accommodation, and the costs of all meals plus participation in the excursions and social events).

- We would greatly appreciate if you would forward this announcement to any PhD-candidates who might be interested in this event -
