The UPDP Programme focuses on urban, social, economic and institutional transformations in contemporary cities and it aims at fostering innovative and interdisciplinary research. Applicants are requested to submit a research proposal with reference to topics of their interest. We encourage proposals covering topics such as :
• Multi-scalar regional urbanization processes
• Advances and challenges in contemporary planning theory and practice
• Urban transitions towards sustainability
• Social and economic changes and their effects on spatial development processes

Requirements:

  • Msc or Diploma in one of the relevant disciplines (Human Geography, Planning,

  • Political Science, Sociology)

  • Good knowledge of European planning systems

  • Experience in more than one national planning system is of advantage

Area of responsibility:

Teaching (BA and Msc):

  • European Planning Systems

  • Metropolitan governance and planning in Europe
  • (Teaching can be done in English)

Research:

  • Comparative empirical research of planning practices in Europe

  • Aspects of European spatial development (migration, transport, etc.)

  • Comparative urban research in Europe

The salary is according to German legislation in public service and depending upon the education degree up to the level 13 TV-L, respectively according to TVÜ-L. The position is a part-time job (50%).

The opportunity to do a PhD is given. An exposé of 2-3 pages describing the topic of the PhD-thesis should be part of the application.

Assistant/Associate Professor in History of Architecture and Urbanism

The Department of Architecture in the College of Architecture, Art, and Planning at Cornell University invites applications for a full time tenure-track or tenured position in the History of Architecture and Urbanism at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. We seek an innovative scholar and teacher with expertise in modernisms within a global context. The successful candidate will participate in and contribute to an architectural curriculum that offers B.Arch., M.Arch., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in hand, scholarly publications, and teaching experience. Responsibilities will include teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels, research, advising, and administration. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The candidate appointed to the annual theme of 2014 “Urban culture, public space and ways of life – Everyday life and insights”, will engage in teaching and research on various aspects of the social production of lived spaces.

Post-Doc Fellowship (12 Months) at CESNOVA, Centre for Sociological Studies of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa

The Centre for Sociological Studies of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa invites applications for 1 (one) postdoctoral researcher fellowship in the framework of the Strategic Project of this research Centre (PEST-OE/SADG/UI4067/2011), funded by national funds through FCT/MCTES.

Work plan: The work should be developed at CESNOVA (Lisbon) and the researcher must develop her/his own research project under the umbrella of the larger Research Group. The research areas admitted are: 1) Waterfront redevelopment; 2) Culture and leisure in cities; 3) Gentrification; 4) Metropolisation. The Postdoctoral Researcher will carry out his/her research in order to produce publications and propose new and relevant projects to national and international funding institutions. S/he will also take part in common projects, take part and organize workshops and/or conferences. There are no teaching obligations, but there are opportunities available.

Main outputs: To produce and adequately disseminate relevant scientific research in the area of Urban Sociology/Urban Studies. To contribute to the scientific quality and internationalisation the research group.

Requirements: The candidates for the post-doctoral fellowship should have:

  • A Ph.D in Sociology or other Social Science with specialisation in urban issues
  • A track record of relevant research in Urban Sociology or other social science with focus on one of the following areas: 1) Waterfront redevelopment; 2) Culture and leisure in cities 3) Gentrification
  • An excellent track record of publications, namely in relevant international peer reviewed journals
  • Proficiency in English
  • Presentation of a brief research proposal (maximum 5 pages, in English) explaining the main objective, methodology and motivation for a one year research project in one of the above mentioned areas)

Starting date of the contract (prevision): April 2013

Value of grant: 1495€
