EURA 2022 CONFERENCE - MILAN

DEFRAG-EUROPE: FRAGILITY/ANTIFRAGILITY AT PLAY IN CONTEMPORARY EUROPE

16-18 June 2022

The 2022 EURA Conference promotes critical reflection on various processes of fragilization, which imposes distress on places and people, particularly in Europe, evidently tightly related to the global transition that the world is experiencing. The event invites scholars to dare challenge mainstream concepts and approaches, promoting transdisciplinary research and contributing to feeding a new policy agenda based on anti-fragility policies.

After two complicated years into the Covid-19 pandemic, the EURA Conference 2022 will provide a unique opportunity for this community of scholars to enjoy the pleasure of exchange and critical discussion. They will also encounter an important Italian city, Milan, which represents some of the societal challenges tackled during this conference.

EURA 2022 Conference in Milan will be an in-person event, based on intensive track sessions and supported by side events and study trips, to provide the pleasure and the benefits of a face-to-face exchange once again.

EURA 2022 welcomes scholars in the field of urban studies to contribute with panels and abstracts to the following 11 tracks. Topics addressed in the tracks are not exclusive; they intend to inspire discussions and exchanges of innovative ideas and knowledge. Please feel free to suggest issues and perspectives that can dialogue with this call for abstracts. The call is also open to the proposal for special sessions (panels) within each track.

PANELS SUBMISSION DEADLINE: 25 February 2022

ABSTRACTS SUBMISSION DEADLINE: 1 March 2022

EURA 2022 SUMMER SCHOOL – MADRID

RURAL AND URBAN IN LOCAL GOVERNMENT

28 June 2022 - 02 July 2022

The European Urban Research Association (EURA) and the Standing Group on Local Government and Politics (ECPR) are happy to endorse this year's Summer School, organized by the Institute of Local Government and Law at the Autonomous University of Madrid. The Summer School will take place in La Cristalera, Miraflores de la Sierra, Madrid, Spain. Prof. Carmen Navarro will act as course director.

This Summer School is one of the many long-lasting series of summer courses for PhD-students interested in issues related to local government and politics. It provides an opportunity to develop a further understanding of comparative local government studies and to discuss PhD-related research with an experienced international faculty that specialize in an array of disciplines. The Summer School is also an excellent opportunity to establish, deepen or widen networks with scholars working on similar topics in the field.

This Summer School looks to attract PhD students from different subfields and methodological approaches in local studies and provide them with the opportunity to discuss their projects with peers and scholars participating in the course.

The 2022 edition will be held in Madrid under the topic of Rural and Urban in Local Government and Politics. The global phenomena of urbanisation, on the one hand, and of depopulation of rural areas on the other, bring along a wide variety of challenges to local governments regarding not only the local responsibilities and public services that big and small municipalities can decide on and implement, but also key issues, such as financial arrangements, political structures, intergovernmental relations, policy agendas or citizens’ participation in local decision-making.

Summer School Sessions will start on the 29th of June in the morning and will run until the 2nd of July afternoon. The welcoming dinner will be on the 28th at 8 pm. The organization covers costs of accommodation and meals for the 25 PhD participants selected for the Summer School. Participants will have to cover their travel expenses.

EURA CONFERENCE HOST/ORGANISER

CALL FOR EXPRESSION OF INTEREST

The European Urban Research Association President and Board invites expressions of interest from Universities, Research Centres and Research Institutes who would be interested in organising and hosting the EURA annual conference in 2023.

The annual EURA conference should have a conference theme which is broad enough to be attractive for EURA members with different backgrounds and interests. Within such a broad overall topic there is room for an array of more specialised parallel tracks and workshops.

EURA conferences are truly interdisciplinary events and accommodate scholars from, political sciences, urban economics, urban studies, urban sociology, sustainability studies, geography, urban design and planning. EURA conferences usually attract between 200–400 participants (smaller conferences are sometimes organized).

The EURA President and Board are also interested in receiving Expressions of Interest to host subsequent EURA conferences from 2025 onwards. The 2024 conference will be jointly organized with the Urban Affairs Association (UAA) and will take place in New York.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: 31 March 2022
