#75 Urban mobility as a political conflict

Car-free zones have become a new normal in many European cities. Cities like Paris, Milan, London and Oslo have restricted car-driving in the city centres to improve air quality, reduce congestion, and enhance urban amenities. Car-free zones are seen as a key means of reducing emission from transport and to reach climate neutrality by 2050.

#74 Cityscapes of Creativity. Exploring Urban Life with Creative Methods

In spring 2024, in a New York conference room at the International Conference on Urban Affairs, academics put heads together and cogitated on the evolution of the EURA Conversation blog series. One result of that meet-up? A twin series of blogs, written by myself and my colleague from the University of Palermo, Dr Stefania Crobe, focusing on our shared passion: arts-based methods in urban research

#73 The role of spatial planning law. A case study of Central and Eastern European countries

Spatial and urban planning covers numerous diverse thematic areas. In this context, architectural issues, geographical issues, environmental and nature protection, cultural heritage protection, social objectives and responses to climate change are particularly noteworthy. The list of issues is long. Combining them, and jointly implementing the associated objectives, is a difficult challenge.

#71 Here we make Europe, or we die…

On 15th March 2025 – it was a Saturday – 50,000 people quietly invaded Piazza del Popolo in Rome, a monumental square that has often witnessed key events within Italian political history. Called a ‘Square for Europe’, the gathering originated from the idea of Michele Serra, a columnist for a major national newspaper (La Repubblica), who claimed that a large mobilization of civil society was needed to contrast the repeated attacks, from different sides, on European values and identity. In his opening speech, Serra used a translation of the famous battle cry ‘Here we make Italy, or we die’ (‘Qui si fa l’Italia o si muore’), shouted by Giuseppe Garibaldi before a key battle during his successful campaign to unite the country in 1860, hence the title of this blogpost

#70 Reflections from the Editors

Advice is sometimes offered that you should “reflect” upon what you have said or written. Such advice is often acknowledged but not necessarily enacted. In this particular Conversation, each of the editors has been interviewed, and I have encouraged them to reflect upon what we are doing – or trying to do – with the EURA Conversations blog. A number of contributors to the EURA Conversations blog have been approached to respond to this piece. I would encourage all readers to respond as well. We, the editors, are merely the curators of YOUR blog...

#69 Hot in the City. Failures at COP29 leave the best chance for Climate Action in the hands of local authorities

The late, legendary musician Bob Marley once said: “Everything is political. I will never be a politician or even think political. Me just deal with life and nature. That is the greatest thing to me.” Had he still been alive in 2024, he might have wondered what is next for the things he held most dear in his homeland of Jamacia, one of the Small Island States left bitterly disappointed, and at risk, by the outcomes of COP29...
